A couple in California was arrested over the weekend after it was discovered that they had been holding 13 people captive.

According to CNN, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said the victims ranged in age from 2 to 29.

Authorities discovered the group of hostages after a 17-year-old girl managed to escape and call 911 from a cell phone she had discovered inside the home, located in Perris.

According to the Riverside Sheriff’s Department, the teen revealed to police on the phone that she and her 12 siblings were being held captive by their parents, who had bound several of their children in chains and padlocks.

Though the girl was 17, authorities admitted that she "appeared to be only 10 years old and slightly emaciated."

When sheriff’s deputies responded to the home, they reportedly found 12 children who "appeared malnourished and very dirty."

"Deputies located what they believed to be 12 children inside the house, but were shocked to discover that 7 of them were actually adults, ranging in age from 18 to 29," the sheriff's department said.

Several of the individuals were "in dark and foul-smelling surroundings," while authorities were stunned to discover that seven of the victims were adults.

After the teen who initially called 911 was interviewed, authorities tracked down the girl’s parents, 57-year old David Allen Turpin and 49-year old Louise Anna Turpin.

When investigators questioned the Turpins, they reportedly could not clearly explain why their 12 children were bound and shackled in their home.

According to police, the couple were completely "unable to immediately provide a logical reason why their children were restrained in that manner" and were promptly arrested.

Once the victims were rescued, they were given plenty of food and refreshments, as they claimed to be starving.

According to CNN, the Turpins were both arrested on suspicion of torture and child endangerment, and their bail was set at a whopping $9 million each.

All 13 of the couple’s victims have been taken to hospitals in the area to be treated.

NBC News has since shared this unbelievable story on Facebook, where many commenters slammed the Turpins for their twisted actions.

“This is so vile. But aren't parents questioned & looked into if their children aren't attending schools? What about neighbors or other family members? Surely someone noticed something strange before this,” one woman wrote.

Another wrote: “if they couldn't even provide a reason for why the kids were chained,, i'd suspect it was likely sexual in nature. Even insane child neglect people try to offer up some flimsy logic for why they did the evil things they did.. These people not even trying to come up with a reason just sounds like it was sexual abuse..”

“Let me guess what they are going to claim when they finally do speak. I was only following what god says to do in the bible, or some version. Haven't once heard of anyone not claiming "their" god told them not to do it, but actually told them or they read that's what you are supposed to do,” one commenter also wrote.
