An Ohio mom is on trial after she posed as a doctor and lied about her toddler son having cancer so she could swindle people out of their hard-earned money.

According to WGN-TV, Monika Burgett convinced doctors at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center that she was also a doctor and that her 3-year-old son had been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

At this time, officials at Children’s Hospital have not revealed what role, if any, Burgett played in her son’s course of treatment.

According to assistant prosecutor Anne Flanagan, Burgett used her son’s story to raise more than $40,000 on GoFundMe for his alleged treatments.

Flanagan revealed that Burgett even shaved her son’s head and his eyebrows for his photos on GoFundMe.

According to a GoFundMe spokesman, the site will absolutely return the money to all of the donors if it is discovered that Burgett’s page was nothing more than a scam.

After everything she did, Burgett is on trial for child abuse, felonious assault, and telecommunications fraud.

As for her role in treating her son while posing as a doctor, Dr. Robert Shapiro testified in court that Burgett "became a member of the health care team" while her son was being treated with drugs like Oxycodone and methadone, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

It wasn’t until doctors began to suspect that Burgett was lying about her son’s symptoms that they finally contacted child services, which immediately launched an investigation.

Burgett's lawyer, M.J. Hugan, insisted that Burgett only lied about being a doctor and really did think there was something wrong with her son, who was born premature.

Hugan also said in court that Burgett was married to a man while he was in medical school and considered herself to be as knowledgeable as a doctor.

"At some point, she adopted the idea that she was a physician," Hugan said.

Fortunately, the boy, who is now 5, was taken out of Burgett’s care and now lives with his father in Texas, according to court records.

After WGN shared this story on Facebook, many parents seemed completely shocked and horrified that a mother could possibly lie about her child having cancer, let alone about being a doctor.

“How could any lie about a child having any sick long be caner. My daughter did die with brain caner. I would have my life for her right now or than. It's not a dam joke. Money or any thing else that just down heartless,” one woman wrote.

“She should be made to pay back every penny to those who contributed. Dress her in orange and make her work off her debt. Shame shame on her,” another added.
