Being a parent to a child with autism is no easy task. Parenting in general is tough, but autistic children require a lot of attention, and can often struggle being out in public places.

Jamie Mathews Heustess is the mother to a wonderful boy with autism named Ian. While Jamie no doubt loves Ian more than anything in the world, she admits that her days are “hit or miss”, and that most days they “do OK”. Jamie was having a particularly challenging time one day when she went to a local Cracker Barrel restaurant in Pooler, Georgia.

“After Chris and Ian left, our waitress came to ask if we were ordering. This was probably her 5th or 6th time stopping by the table. I said yes, a to go order, just for me. She asked if my husband or son wanted anything and I said no, my husband took our son home to reduce stimuli around him.”

As Jamie began to explain to the waitress what a full day the family had had, and how Ian had reached his “breaking point” she found herself starting to cry. “I told her Ian was autistic and had had a long day...By this time I was crying and having a moment, not because I was embarrassed that my son is autistic, but because he is a good kid and I didn't want anyone to think he was just a spoiled kid being a brat.”

Whether you child has a condition like autism or not, any parent can relate to the feeling of being overwhelmed and just wanting to cry. Every child experiences meltdowns, and when they happen in a public place, it is easy to feel like a failure or a bad parent. Luckily, Jamie waitress was incredibly understanding and kind.

“Our server was gracious and sweet. She said it was not a problem, that she would get my order in quickly.”

When Jamie’s waitress returned, she continued to overwhelm the mother with her sincere kindness.

“About 15 minutes later, out comes my server with my bag of dinner. She smiled and told me that my dinner had been taken care of, no need for payment. I started crying all over again. I asked if she was sure and she reassured me it was taken care of, not to worry.”

Seeing that Jamie had been going through a particularly trying day, the amazing waitress decided not to charge her for the to-go order. Her sweet gesture caused Jamie to get even more emotional, and she admits that she looked “crazy” and she left the restaurant in tears. On her way out, Jamie noticed a piece of paper that had been stapled to her to go bag. When she read it, she was in complete disbelief.

“There was a piece of paper stapled to my bag, I thought it was the receipt.....no.... it was something far more precious. In the midst of my own meltdown she reached out with words of encouragement and a kind heart:

She wrote, 'Your child is amazing mommy. Be strong, keep your head up. You are doing a great job. Have a great night. Your server, Kailyn'”.

Jamie says that she keeps the note on her refrigerator for when she needs to be reminded of the kindness of complete strangers.

What do you think of Jamie’s experience with her waitress at Cracker Barrel?
