A mother who tried to kill her two children before attempting suicide reportedly did so to get back at the father of one of her children.
According to the Daily Herald, 38-year-old Tracy F. Johnson, who lives in a Chicago suburb, allegedly acted out of anger when she attempted to kill her children.
Prosecutors say Johnson told police that the father of one of her children “was verbally abusive and did not take her problems seriously,” so she decided to get back at him by killing herself and her two children.
Johnson allegedly told police that she did not want her children to see the man and that “heaven was the best place for all three of them,” according to prosecutors.
When describing the man on a whiteboard in her apartment, Johnson reportedly wrote “fraud.”
Authorities reportedly first responded to Johnson’s apartment around 12:45 p.m. on May 9, after receiving a frantic call from concerned relatives.
According to PEOPLE, when authorities first walked inside the apartment, they immediately smelled gas.
Johnson was reportedly unresponsive, as was her 5-year-old. The 2-year-old was reportedly stumbling around the apartment, confused and out of it.
Investigators soon revealed that Johnson, who has a master’s degree in counseling, had crushed pills and put them inside her children’s smoothies, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Maria McCarthy alleged in court.
When the children refused to drink the smoothies, which they did not like, Johnson reportedly attempted to force-feed them the pills.
McCarthy said in court that Johnson then placed bags over the children’s heads, tied them with rope, and turned on the gas burners on her stove.
In the midst of the chaos, Johnson reportedly texted her mother to tell her that she loved her. Her mother then contacted Johnson’s sister, who called the police.
Once they were safely at the hospital, authorities say the children tested positive for the drug benzodiazepam, more commonly known as Valium or Xanax.
Johnson also tested positive for the same drug, as well as other opiates, police say.
According to PEOPLE, Johnson made her first appearance in court wearing a hospital gown and is currently being evaluated in a hospital, where she has reportedly been held.
She was ordered held on a $2 million bond on two counts of attempted homicide. At this time, it is unclear what plea Johnson plans to enter.
The mother-of-two’s attorney declined to offer any details about her current state at the moment.
