A mom and her boyfriend in New Mexico have both been arrested on serious child abuse charges after a toddler was found with horrific defense wounds all over his arms.
According to KOB, Kimberly Romero and Cain Suarez have both been charged with abandonment or abuse of a child resulting in great bodily harm.
Police say the child’s injuries were brought to light after he was found with heavy bruising on his buttocks and lower back and cuts on his arm.
Investigators later revealed that the little boy’s forearm had been broken during the abuse.
According to KOB, when Children, Youth and Families Department investigators performed a history check on the mother, they found three previous open cases in New Mexico that dealt with excessive abuse, lack of supervision, and sexual molestation.
Deputies were reportedly sent to Catholic Charities (a child development center), where the 3-year-old boy was found with painful injuries all over his body, according to criminal complaints and the arrest warrant.
Police say the boy told then the deputy, "mommy's new guy kicked me in the butt."
Romero, the little boy’s mother, later told investigators that she was having problems with her son at school and "did not know what to do anymore."
That’s when she allegedly asked her boyfriend, Suarez, to help her “discipline” the little boy.
Romero explained that she stayed downstairs while Suarez went upstairs to talk to her son.
According to KOB, she heard Suarez ask the child “What happened at school today?” Instead of hearing a response, Romero claims she heard the sound of Suarez’s belt being removed from his pants.
Police say Romero then heard six spanks before she ran upstairs and watched Romero give her son two more spanks with his leather belt.
According to reports, Romero claims that when she screamed at Suarez to stop, he yelled back saying, "You asked for my help disciplining…But then you contradict me."
After the fight, Romero says she got her things together and went to stay at her mother’s house for the night, but she admits that she did not seek medical attention for her son.
Romero also did not call the police after her boyfriend beat her son, according to KOB.
Police say the injuries on the little boy’s arms are likely defense wounds that prove he tried to block Suarez’s strikes.
The little boy is now in Romero’s mother’s care, but she is not allowed to see him.
