Two adults in Tennessee have been thrown behind bars after a 10-year-old child in their care was found locked inside a cage.

According to WJHL, the Washington County, TN Sheriff’s Office is investigating a case of child abuse and neglect after authorities were asked to check in on a child with autism who was living at a home in Jonesborough.

The welfare check was reportedly carried out around 5 p.m. on Monday, according to Sheriff Ed Graybeal.

Deputies quickly informed the man and woman inside the house that they had been told that there was a child being kept in a cage in the residence.

To their shock and horror, the tip was spot on.

According to authorities, the deputies immediately walked inside the house to find a locked wooden cage on a mattress—with a terrified child inside.

As WCYB reports, deputies instantly noticed that the cage reeked of urine and feces.

Authorities soon discovered that the child in the cage was 10 years old and had autism. They then found three other children living in the house.

According to the sheriff’s office, the Department of Children’s Services responded to the scene and immediately removed all the children from the home.

The two homeowners, 69-year-old Mickey Sparks and 43-year-old Patricia Laws, were then arrested.

According to court records, the parents told authorities that they only locked the little girl in the cage because it was the only way they could control her behavior.

An affidavit obtained by WCYB shows that Sparks and Laws actually told officers at the scene that Department of Child Services personnel had visited the home before and "approved the caged area" for them.

However, a CPS Supervisor called to the home during the police investigation revealed that nobody in the agency had ever approved the couple’s decision to lock their little girl in a disgusting cage.

Authorities were absolutely shocked when Sparks and Laws told investigators that they had been locking their child in the cage for "the last three to four years.”

Sparks also revealed to investigators that he had set up surveillance cameras to keep an eye on his daughter from the cage.

When authorities rescued the girl from the cage, they found her lying on the mattress. They also noted that the cage did not have a roof.

"She did not appear to be in distress," the officer wrote.

Sparks and Laws will reportedly be arraigned on aggravated child abuse and neglect charges on Tuesday afternoon.
