Jill And Derick Dillard Boldly Ask Fans For Money As They Return To El Salvador
Jill and Derick Dillard are asking their fans to sponsor their mission trip to El Salvador. And there are so many things wrong with that!
The rumors of Jill and Derick’s imminent return to their mission trip to El Salvador are true. The little Dillard family posted on their family website that they are returning to Central America after returning home for a short period.
During this period, Jill got pregnant with Baby Dillard #2, Derick unsuccessfully tried ot figure out his health problems, and well, various amounts of Duggar children either got married or got pregnant or entered courtships.
So, their “short period” was packed with tons of events. But none of those events earned them any cold hard cash to take to El Salvador.
In their blog post, Jill and Derick explained that “from the early stages of our lives, the Lord has put a deep love and care in both of our hearts for all peoples of the world.”
The couple explained that “through our ministry and your support, we can help support local churches, and impact hundreds of lives on a daily basis.”
“Once a week we go into villages hit hard by violence, and provide various skills training for adults, Bible study, kids programs and crafts. On average we help over 40 adults and children every week.”
They then went on to explain “your support” meant monetary support. They included a link to their tax-exempt organization.
But they also explained that not all the money goes directly to the people of El Salvador. “In addition to the ministry outreach expenses, there are always monthly expenses for groceries, utilities, fuel, healthcare, etc. We have always purposed to live a frugal lifestyle and continue to do so in the mission field.”
Some fans however, have blasted this shameless plea for money. One commenter said, “It’s fine work you do but if you and your sisters donate your TV salaries and forgo fancy weddings, that money could help so many more…”
Another said, “I am all for them doing mission work. But it’s slightly offensive to ask for donations. They have a freaking TV show. Live frugally with some of that money. I guess greed does come in all shapes and sizes.”
Many have pointed out that neither Jill or Derick have jobs, and likely pay no rent because they live in a house owned by Jim Bob. Another pointed out that Jim Bob himself has an impressive property portfolio that could “feed the whole of Central America for years on end.”
The Dillards are asking for 600 families to give a one-time donation of $40. Do the math, and that’s $24,000, which leads many to wonder why it costs that much for a frugal mission trip.
Jill and Derick’s only indication of how long they’ll stay in El Salvador was that they would be back in the States in time for Jill to give birth. The due date for Baby Dillard #2 is July, so that’s at least four months in El Salvador.
