A mother and father from New Mexico who lost their teenage son in a deadly car crash are disturbed by a huge fundraiser for the driver who caused the accident.
According to The Daily Mail, Mike and Lynn Mundt, of Sante Fe, are still mourning the death of their 16-year-old son Alex Mundt, who was killed in a car accident in October 2015.
Alex had been visiting his friend, Abigail McGaha, when the pair got into the horrific accident.
Authorities say McGaha was driving anywhere between 70 and 100 mph at the time of the crash, despite the speed limit being 35 mph.
Alex was reportedly killed in the crash, even though he had been wearing his seatbelt in the backseat when McGaha was driving more than twice the speed limit.
Although McGaha was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving, she later pleaded down to a lesser charge.
The teen’s family has since set up a fundraising page for McGaha that aims to raise at least $75,000 for her legal fees.
“Except for serving the remainder of her probation, Abby’s criminal legal battle is pretty much behind us,” Joseph McGaha wrote on the page. “But the civil battle remains with Alex’s family. In an effort to avoid a civil lawsuit, we have settled with Alex’s family.”
“This obviously has placed a great financial burden upon us, and we have utilized money that we had been saving for years,” he continued.
Alex’s father was horrified by the amount of money the family raised.
“I'm stunned that they would do such a thing,” he told WHIO. “I can't imagine what all was involved in the case and then a civil settlement afterwards, but those are natural consequences of crime and to ask the community to pay for the consequences of crime is incredulous to me.”
