How to Keep the Kids Safe this Halloween

It is almost Halloween and the kids are ready to go trick-or-treating. They might already be overly excited about spending the night getting candy and being dressed up. With all that excitement, remember the most important part of the night is keeping the kids safe. Here are a few tips to consider for a safe Halloween night:

Be cautious of oversized costumes: When your kids are running around at night, it is important that they are wearing safe costumes.  You need to avoid costumes that may be a tripping hazard.  You know your child will not be happy if he or she trips while trick-or-treating.  To avoid this problem, check for lose ends of the costume before the kids leave.  Also, it is vital that the costumes are flame retardant.  You can never be too safe the night of Halloween.

Use a safe candy bag: Stay away from plastic Halloween bags.  You don’t want your kids to accidently put the plastic bag around their heads.  It could be dangerous when children are playing around with plastic bags.  The best bags are cloth and have handles to make it easier for your child to carry.  Look for decorated bags to make Halloween even more special.

Warn the kids about strangers: Now is the perfect time to talk with your children about the potential danger of strangers. Remind the children to stick together when they approach a house with people they haven’t met before.  Also, it is most important to remind them to never go into a house, even if they are invited.

Bring a flashlight: You never know how late the children will be out trick-or-treating.  If they are planning to stay out late at night, then bring a flashlight.  Don’t rely on the streetlights alone.  Plus, an added bonus is your group of children will be even easier to spot.

Watch the candy consumption: After all the fun trick-or-treating, it is inevitable that the kids will be craving all their candy.  Try to limit their consumption.  You don’t want them to become sick from too much sugar.
