6 Tips to Remember When You Need a Baby Sitter

Playing with childrenAll parents become nervous at the thought of leaving their young one for the first time. The babysitter that you choose needs to be the right fit for you and your baby. Don’t worry if you are being picky about whomever you choose. This is an important decision and you have every right to be specific about what you want. Here are 6 tips to keep in mind when selecting your babysitter:

  1. Start looking in advance- Try to make your plans in advice so you know your baby is in the right hands. The earlier you set plans and start looking for a babysitter, the better options you will have to decide. Finding a babysitter may be stressful with any amount of time, so give yourself a comfortable time frame to select your sitter.
  2. Ask your friends for recommendations- Your best and safest option is to find a babysitter that has worked for your friends. In this case, you will know someone else has already had a positive experience with this person and you will hopefully have that same experience.
  3. Think about the babysitter’s age- It is always important to make sure the babysitter is an appropriate age before hiring her or him. If your baby is still very young then you might want an older sitter. However, the sitter’s age might not be as important if your child is older. The maturity level of the sitter is really the most important thing to consider.
  4. Talk to the babysitters before hiring them- You might have several different sitters to consider. Therefore, it will be the most beneficial to sit down and talk with them. Having a personality that is compatible with you and your child is extremely important. You will also feel more comfortable leaving your child if you know the babysitter better.
  5. Check if they have first aid training- Some sitters might have first aid training which would be a huge bonus. However, if they don’t, it is really important that they may at least know how to react in an emergency situation.
  6. Be certain the babysitter has good references- Check with former employers of the sitter to learn about their opinion of the sitter. Their opinion will be a great indicator as to how the babysitter works. Don’t feel guilty about really researching the sitter. You want your baby to feel as safe as possible.

You child’s safety is the most important thing to you. Every parent feels anxious about leaving a child at first. This is a natural feeling. Don’t forget these tips when hiring your baby’s sitter and remember you have every right to be picky!
