A Florida man has been arrested after he was accused of stealing a cell phone from a 4-year-old girl in Walmart before texting her father.
According to Inside Edition, Nelson Quiles and his daughter, Angela, were shopping at Walmart earlier this month, when the little girl accidentally dropped her phone somewhere in the store.
While Quiles and his daughter later searched the store to locate the missing phone, they could not find it, according to Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies.
Assuming it had likely been picked up and stolen, Quiles reportedly texted his daughter’s cell phone and asked whoever had it to return it, explaining that the phone actually belonged to a 4-year-old girl.
According to a charging affidavit, the alleged thief simply wrote back, “LMAO.”
He also wrote, “OK, well, the Walmart floor said I can have it,” the document said.
The affidavit states that the little girl was "visibly upset and crying" over the stolen phone.
Surveillance footage from the store reportedly shows an adult male picking the phone up after seeing it on the ground, according to police.
Just a few seconds later, the man can be seen leaving the store before returning the pick up an order that he had placed online.
Based on his receipt and phone number, police identified the phone thief as 30-year-old Mykhal Henderson of Deltona.
When he was finally arrested at a traffic stop, Henderson confessed to stealing the phone and handed it over to police without incident.
According to Inside Edition, Henderson has six previous convictions for theft.
Click 2 Orlando has since shared this story online, where many people agreed that Henderson was cruel for stealing a child’s cell phone.
“The ridiculous thing is he has SIX CONVICTIONS for theft. Time to throw away the key. Jail is clearly not working to rehabilitate him,” one commenter wrote.
“And the theft should be liable n in jail. What an ahoe. From a 4yr old. A baby. Seriously this world is coming to an end. Poor kids suffer,” another added.
Some commenters, however, suggested that a 4-year-old is too young to have a cell phone in the first place.
“First, what a POS. Second, why does a 4 year old have a cell phone?” one woman commented.
“Well maybe a 4 year old really should not have a cell phone. Heck I won't even let a 4 year old touch my phone. I don't understand what a 4 year needs one for calling all her friends?” another wrote.
